Millennuim Medical Group South Sleep Study
Overnight Sleep Study

An overnight sleep study is a 6-8 hour recording of physical changes that occur while you are sleeping. Your brain activity, heart rate, leg movements, oxygen levels, and breathing are monitored during this test to diagnose a variety of sleep disorders.

Sleep is essential to your health, safety and quality of life. Patients suffering from symptoms such as sleepiness, difficulty concentrating, snoring, inability to fall asleep, or restless legs need to speak with their health care professional. Most sleep disorders can be diagnosed and treated in safe and effective ways.

Because we understand that visiting a sleep lab is a new experience, every effort has been made to make your stay a comfortable one. Our facility provides individual bedrooms and bathrooms with a “hotel” like atmosphere. Each room has a flat screen TV, telephone, wireless internet access, and private shower. Upon arrival you will be greeted by our friendly staff and shown to your room. While you are becoming familiar with the surroundings, an educational video will play on your TV screen.

A board registered/ board eligible Technologist will go over any questions or concerns you may have, as well as what you can expect during your testing. At this point, electrodes will be applied for monitoring. The application of electrodes can be worrisome for some patients however, rest assured this process is painless! The electrodes simply record electrical activity already present in the body and transmitted to a computer for recording. Once your recording is complete, a detailed report will be sent to your sleep specialist or your primary care physician for follow up care. These results can be expected within 1-2 weeks.

The Dearborn Sleep Lab has trusted and experienced board certified / board eligible sleep physicians to diagnosis a variety of sleep disorders.

Diagnostic procedures include:

  • Polysomnography: This is an overnight sleep test. It is used to help detect a variety of sleep disorders. It is most often used to find out if someone has a sleep related breathing disorder.
  • Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP): This sleep study is used to set the right air pressure for CPAP therapy in patients with sleep apnea.
  • Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT): This is mainly used to find out if someone has narcolepsy. It charts how quickly you fall asleep during quiet daytime situations. It also measures how fast you enter the stage of REM sleep.
  • Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT): This study is used to measure how alert you are during the day. It shows whether or not you are able to stay awake for a defined period of time.

A sleep study is usually covered by health insurance as an outpatient procedure and is complete with an overnight stay within a sleep facility.
